Boron Nitride for thermal conductive polymers
Historically, the use of metal heat sinks has been the preferred option for dissipating heat from mechanical and electronic sub-assemblies. This resulted in the need to create complex systems and assemblies to isolate the metal parts electrically. This increased the cost and assembly time as well as worsening the heat dissipation properties of the system.
Thermal conductors in the form of intrinsically electrically insulating polymers represent an innovative alternative for this sector. The HeBoFill® COOL LINE range has been specifically designed for use in polymer development. They take advantage of the unique properties of Boron Nitride, which include high thermal conductivity as well as being electrically insulating. An additional benefit that can be achieved by incorporating HeBoFill® additives within the polymer substrate is the reduction in wear that arises from reduced friction. Such polymer composites are therefore well suited for use in polymer bearings and other components in powertrain systems.
As a result, both the performance and the application spectrum of the base polymers can be increased by using HeBoFill® Boron Nitride. Mechanical and electronic components can be mounted or even directly encapsulated, facilitating assembly and simplifying the system. Component heat dissipation, electrical isolation reliability, vibration protection and dirt and moisture tightness have been shown to be significantly improved using such solutions.
